Mary Ann Ehlers

Mary Ann Ehlers (nee Gilles), passed peacefully on Sunday, October 15, 2023. She was born in Elyria, OH on August 8, 1930 and graduated from Elyria Catholic High School in 1950. After graduation, she worked at Standard Oil in Elyria as a bookkeeper, and then married Louis F. Ehlers, Jr. on February 2, 1952. Mary Ann worked at H&R Block from 1970-1976, but primarily was a homemaker who loved to crochet.  She won many ribbons at the Lorain County Fair with her doilies and crochet dolls. She was a member of St. Vincent De Paul Church.  Mary Ann spent many years babysitting her grandchildren, helping to raise them.

The family would like to thank the staff at O’Neill Healthcare in North Ridgeville for all the kindness shown to our mom. Our family will always remember and be grateful to you.  Thank you also for the support of Hospice of O’Neill Healthcare North Ridgeville at the end of Mom’s journey.

Mary Ann is survived by her daughters, Dolores Fuehrer (James) of Elyria, Mary Hardwick of Albany, KY, Debora Ashley of N. Ridgeville, and Monica Ooten (Clarence) of WV; son, Douglas Ehlers of Elyria; many grandchildren and great, great grandchildren; and brother, Ed Gilles.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Louis Ehlers, Jr; son, Louis Ehlers III; parents, Edward and Myrtle Gilles; brothers, Richard, James, and Leo Gilles; and sisters, Dorothy Frabotta, Katherine Jezewski, Isabel Winchester, and Grace Brown.

Private family burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, 7284 Lake Ave., Elyria, OH.
