Robert A Plas, age 90, died peacefully on March 22, 2026 after a short time in hospice at his home in Assisted Living at O’Neill Healthcare in North Ridgeville. Born and raised in Avon, Ohio, he lived most of his adult life in Elyria. He was married to his wife Marilyn for nearly 70 years. He was the father of five, grandfather of 17, and great-grandfather of 9 (with one more on the way). He had a wonderful sense of humor and could always see the bright side of things. He kept his friends and family laughing even up to the last few days of his life.
He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church where he served as an usher and enjoyed playing in the church softball league. He proudly served in the US Army, where he was stationed at Fort Hancock in Sandy Hook, NJ and made some lifelong friends there. Bob was a hardworking man who had numerous jobs including Pfaudler, Fuller Brush, General Industries and then finally Central Exterminating, where he worked until retiring. He often worked two jobs at a time so that he could afford to send all his children to Catholic schools. After retiring, he worked part time at Avis Rental Car for a few years.
He coached his sons in Little League baseball and then continued as an umpire even after his boys were no longer playing. He loved to camp and fish and passed his love of the outdoors to all of his children. He was an avid Cleveland sports fan, especially the Browns and the Guardians.
As a grandpa, he had a “magic shirt pocket” that always managed to be filled with candy when the grandkids and great grandkids came over. He was a member of Foresters, International Order of Moose, American Legion, and Amvets. He loved playing pinochle and dominoes and was a bit of a pool shark.
He and his wife Marilyn loved to travel and especially enjoyed their numerous cruises throughout the Caribbean. When their children were young, they vacationed every summer at a cabin on Pymatuning Lake in Pennsylvania. They also loved to take their children camping at various local campgrounds.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn (Reitz),his children, Debbie Vigg(Curt), Bruce Plas (Jennifer), Gary Plas (Debbie), and Brenda Below (Scott), daughter in law, Diane Plas, his 17 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his firstborn son, David Plas (Diane).
