Shelby J Newman

Shelby Jean Newman (Chaffin), 86, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on December 13th, 2025 in Avon, Ohio. She was born to Nathan Chaffin Sr. and Elizabeth Copley on May 19, 1939 in Webb, West Virginia. After graduating from Fort Gay High School in 1956, she moved to Lorain, where she met and married Carmel B. Newman on July 27, 1957. Together they raised five children: Sharon, Michael, Carmel Jr., Nathan (Homer), and Brian.

She dedicated her life to creating a warm and nurturing home for her husband, children, and grandchildren. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family and fostering a loving environment. She was also an avid gardener, and had a multitude of flowers and plants in her yard, which she tended for over five decades. In addition to the flower gardens, Shelby doted on her angel gardens, which included many angel monuments and memorials.

Shelby is survived by her husband of 68 years, Carmel; daughter, Sharon (Bill) Newsome of Kentucky; sons, Michael (Deanne) Newman of South Amherst, and Nathan (Heather) Newman of Amherst; eight grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Nathan and Lizzie; brothers, Opie Sammons, Wayne Sammons , Jay Sammons, William Chaffin, and Lloyd Chaffin; and two sons, Carmel Newman Jr. and Brian Newman.

Friends may call at Wyers-Bollinger Funeral Chapel, 2900 N. Ridge Rd., Elyria 44035, Wednesday, December 17, 2025 from 4:00 - 8:00 pm. Funeral Services will be Thursday, December 18, 2025 at 10:00 am at Wyers-Bollinger Funeral Chapel, followed by burial at Ridgehill Cemetery in Amherst.
