Wilma Irene Workman

Wilma Irene Workman, 94 of Elyria, passed away at her home on Sunday, September 13, 2026. She was born on December 2, 1931 in Sewell, West Virginia to Walter and Maggie (nee Reynolds) Martin.

Wilma went through many trying and hard times throughout her life. She survived many issues but still found good in people and was always there for others in their time of need. She opened her home to those she barely knew, and she fed strangers because she couldn’t stand to see someone hungry. Wilma would give her last dollar she had to help others when they were in a pinch. She was selfless, yet honest with how she felt as well, she was not afraid to tell you her opinion whether you wanted it or not. Halloween was one of her favorite times as she would dress up in fabulous costumes along with all of the other holidays which made a huge impact on many lives.

She and her husband moved from New York to Elyria, Ohio where they made their home and became active in the community and spent a lot of time outdoors. Wilma was very hard-working and had several jobs in her life, but the one she loved the most was working at Indian Hollow Golf Course. She loved gardening her roses and nature in general, as is evidenced by the wildlife that continue to come up to her home looking for food and companionship.

As the mother of a fallen soldier, she considered being a Gold Star Mother, a sad but honored title that she wore with pride.

She was honored to be a member of the LaPorte United Methodist Church and her Christian faith was very important to her. Her family remembers her as a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed cooking for them and spending time with them.

Wilma is survived by her children, Marcia (Greg) and Marvin Lee (Cheryl); grandchildren, Andrea Mayton (Allen), Erica, Rachel Coe, John Cody Martin (Lisa), Sarah Woods (Matt), Krissy Schlau (Jeremy), Joseph Workman (Jonah), Michael Crocker, and Sophie Cadger; great grandchildren, Caleb, Colton, Kaylee, Bella, Alyssa, Ella, Eric, Kayla, McKenzie, Aiden, Gabriella, Gio, John, and Gavin; siblings, Garland Martin and Phyllis Miller and nephew, Jeff Meadows (Paula). She considered close friends, Jeanette Wall (Doug), Mary Addi, Tena and Jessica, and Tony Piwinski (Rose) like family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Maggie Martin; husband, Marvin; son, Lance Corporal Calvin K. Coon who died in Vietnam, and daughter, Patricia A. Martin; along with siblings, Delma, John, Walter “Blackie”, and Georgia.

The family will receive friends at the LaPorte United Methodist Church at 2071 Grafton Road, Elyria, OH on Saturday, September 26, 2026 for a Visitation from 1-2:00 pm with the Funeral Service to begin at 2:00 pm. The family invites everyone to remain after for refreshments and a light lunch.
